Norway

Lyngen Area, Sail & Ski

Norway is an excellent skiing destination, offering a wide range of options for both resort skiing and backcountry touring. The country is known for its stunning landscapes, long winters, and excellent snow conditions.

Among Nordic and European ski tourers, Northern Norway's areas—such as the Lyngen Alps and the Lofoten Islands—have long been popular.

However, one challenge in Norway's most popular ski touring areas is the number of skiers—crowding is becoming increasingly common. Since most groups travel by car, Lumiversumi uses a boat to move between ski areas. This gives access to many fantastic descents that are difficult or time-consuming to reach by road.

Svalbard – An Arctic Dream Destination for Backcountry Skiers, Aboard a Sailing Ship

Svalbard offers a unique combination of Arctic wilderness, silence, and untouched snow. The mountains provide excellent terrain for ski touring, with ascents done under your own power and rewarding descents that often lead all the way to the sea. The best time to visit is April to May, when the temperatures are more manageable, snow conditions are at their best, and there is 24-hour daylight.

On this trip, accommodation is aboard the beautiful sailing vessel S/V Linden, which serves as a floating base, anchoring in sheltered bays right at the base of the ski runs. Sailing through the quiet Arctic landscape is an unforgettable experience and offers a unique perspective on Svalbard’s remote nature.

However, weather conditions can be demanding: wind, rapidly changing visibility, and cold temperatures require an expedition mindset and experienced guides. Safety is taken seriously, and in addition to certified mountain guides, the ship has a dedicated staff member whose duties include operating the Zodiac boat and acting as a polar bear guard whenever skiers go ashore.

This is not a ski resort—it is an Arctic adventure. The destination is best suited for experienced backcountry skiers who are looking for something truly different and unforgettable.
