Japan as a Ski Destination

Japan is a unique skiing destination, offering a remarkable combination of stunning landscapes, high-quality ski resorts, and rich cultural experiences. The country has several ski areas that attract both local and international skiers. The most well-known regions include Hokkaido, the northern part of Honshu, and the Japanese Alps located on Honshu.

Hokkaido is famous for its exceptionally abundant and light powder snow, which many consider the best in the world. The areas around Asahikawa and Furano offer diverse slopes and off-piste opportunities. Ski resorts in the Otaru area, such as Kiroro and Sapporo Kokusai, are also popular and provide excellent options for skiers who appreciate varied conditions and a tranquil atmosphere. The small port town of Otaru also offers fantastic opportunities to enjoy fresh seafood and local delicacies.

Hakuba, located in the Japanese Alps on Honshu, is best known for hosting the 1998 Winter Olympics. Hakuba offers a wide range of slopes and backcountry opportunities, attracting particularly experienced skiers. The village of Hakuba features a diverse selection of restaurants offering both traditional Japanese cuisine and Western dishes.

In addition to skiing, Japan offers a unique cultural experience. After a day on the slopes, you can relax in hot springs, known as onsens, which are an important part of Japanese culture. Local restaurants serve delicious food, such as sushi, tempura, and ramen, and in the evenings, you can enjoy sake or local beer. A ski trip to Japan is not just about the slopes; it’s also a deep dive into the country's culture and traditions.

Lumiversumi / Powder Universe in Japan

Lumiversum’s trips to Japan are divided into off-the-beaten-path tours and resort-based trips. The off-the-beaten-path tours take place in the northern part of Honshu or in Hokkaido, depending on the snow conditions. These trips involve changing ski areas and accommodations 2-3 times during the week. The regions feature a variety of ski resorts, and although some may require longer drives, the journey is often rewarded with soft snow and peaceful backcountry terrain.

For the 2025 season, the resort-based destinations are Hakuba and Tangram. In these locations, the group will travel with a guide to nearby resorts, depending on weather and snow conditions. However, the accommodation remains in the same hotel throughout the week.
