Not your typical Greek holiday!
Greece is known as a wonderful tourist destination where millions of tourists travel annually, but I argue that when you tell your friends that you're heading to Greece in March to enjoy powder skiing, they might think you're a bit crazy. And you'll probably get more puzzled looks when you arrive with skis at Athens/Thessaloniki airport.
But the fact is, Greece has 25 ski resorts (although many are quite small and some are bankrupt), and often during winter, certain areas receive a significant amount of snowfall. In northern and western Greece, there are many mountains that reach the hight of 2500 meters. When the weather is cold enough and low-pressure systems come from the Mediterranean, Greece can experience great powder conditions. Conversely, when conditions change quickly in the south, skiers can enjoy delicious firn. And you can rest assured that even during the best weather and snow conditions, there's no need to fear crowds.
We will use lifts as much as possible, but there will be days when we venture into the backcountry with skins or snowshoes and spend part or all of the day away from the lifts. So, if spending entire ski days without the assistance of lifts isn't your thing, this trip might not be for you! And to be honest, we want to make it clear that on this trip, we won't be chasing the steepest couloirs or venturing into "no fall zone" areas. In short, we're looking for enjoyable and pleasant skiing experiences (powder or spring snow) near lifts or in the backcountry. Greek mountains are not like Chamonix.
Europe and the entire world have suffered from two very warm winters. This is partly due to the unpleasantly fast-paced progression of global warming, but also largely due to the El Niño weather phenomenon, which has been warming oceans worldwide for the past 1.5 to 2 years. However, El Niño is expected to end this summer, and it's likely that the opposite phenomenon, La Niña, will begin next autumn. This will cool ocean temperatures and therefore weather conditions, primarily around the Pacific Ocean, but also elsewhere in the world. After two or three warm and poor winters, there's a reasonable chance that many lower and southern European regions could experience a good winter.
With this in mind, we have decided to include Greece in the PowderUniverse next winter. We will travel to Thessaloniki or Athens on Saturday, March 1st or 8th, and after a week of skiing in Greece, we will return to the airport and fly back home on Saturday, March 8th or 15th. For one week, our group will ski in Greece, targeting areas with snow and more snow. Leading the way will be PowderUniverse's Pette Halme and his old buddy, Australian mountain guide and legendary telemark skier John Falkiner. John knows the Greek mountains, many local guides, and ski resort owners from years past. Before making decisions, John will verify snow conditions through his acquaintances, as he did in winter 2024 when, about 2-3 weeks before the trip, local hotel owners!!! advised against coming (quite the honesty, isn't it). With these two old pros at the helm, we will tour Greek ski areas and backcountry for a week with two minibuses.
We wouldn't organize this trip if we didn't believe we could arrange a fantastic skiing trip for our experienced and well-traveled clients. Combined with Greece's skiing opportunities and the extreme friendliness and hospitality of the Greek people, we can guarantee a memorable journey. Additionally, one crucial aspect of this trip is flexibility! Since early March is about as low season as it gets in Greece, we don't need to book hotels until the very last minute when we see the snow situation. We won't even book flights until sometime in mid-February when we can be sure that the snow bases at the ski resorts are good enough.
And if, by unfortunate luck, there simply isn't enough snow in Greece, then we'll fly somewhere else in Europe and hunt for powder and good snow there.
In other words, those embarking on this journey can expect new, memorable skiing experiences, and we expect our customers to be open and flexible about where we ski.
All the photos on this website were taken in Greece in March 2-5 years ago.

The program of the week is built and refined during the journey, often as early as the previous day.
We will be touring mainland Greece's mountains for a week with two minibuses.
Finns do not need a visa to enter Greece, but in March, those arriving at the Athens airport with skis might be required to present a sanity certificate!
Intermediate level. At times, we'll ski using lifts, but other times we might spend the entire day ski touring. It depends on the conditions. The concept is very much like our Japan Secret Powder trips.
Normal ski trip gear, plus ski touring equipment (touring bindings + skins, splitboard or snowshoes for snowboarders).
Comfortable 3-4 star hotels. We will provide examples of hotels here on the website during the autumn.
